My name is Kanishtha Dhankhar

Welcome to my world! It is said that "the world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page". Fortunately I have read quite a few pages of the book. Coming from a defense background has given me the privilege of travelling across India. Although born in Mumbai, I grew up in various parts of this beautiful country. However, I have lived most of my life in Mumbai and I am still here.

My academic life has been an exciting journey. I am a graduate in Accounting and Finance from H.R. College (Mumbai University). I also hold Post Graduate Diploma in Advertising and Public Relations from Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research, Mumbai. A sports enthusiast, I have represented my school in many competitions.

Travelling, for me, is a great way of connecting with nature and meeting people from all walks of life. As my father is a naval officer, he was posted in different cities including New Delhi, Cochin, Vishakhapatnam and Port Blair. This gave me an opportunity to experience diverse cultures and travelling, naturally, became my hobby.

I love sketching, drawing, dancing and music. I appreciate different genres of music, and some of my favourite artists are Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Empire of the Sun, Adele, Muse, Katy Perry, Black Eyed Peas, U2, The Killers and John Mayer. Apart from this, I love trance. The choice of music depends on my mood.

The charm of the celluloid always mesmerizes me. When it comes to movies, The Godfather, The Lord of the Rings, Inception, The Bourne Series, X-Men, Gladiator and Blood Diamond are some of the films I enjoyed watching.

My daily workouts keep me fit. I have been practising Pilates for a long time and cannot go a day without it.

My Journey

My journey in modelling started two years ago and my love for fashion has turned into a serious passion over time. One of the milestones of this journey was when I took part in the Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2011 pageant and won the coveted title. I was also declared the winner for other titles at the same pageant including:

  • Pantaloons Femina Miss Body Beautiful
  • Femina Miss No Marks
  • Femina Miss Ramp Model
  • Veet Femina Miss Beautiful Legs
  • Femina Miss Water Baby

Since then I have been part of many fashion weeks and prominent fashion magazines. It was great to walk on the ramp for fashion events like LFW, WIFW, and Couture Week. I was featured in some of the most prestigious fashion magazines such as Grazia, Marie Claire, Vogue, and Elle.

I was part of the Tarun Tahiliani team for the Indian Bridal Week. I have also walked the ramp for some of the best names in Indian fashion industry like Manish Arora, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Anamika Khanna, Wendell Roderick, Raakesh Agarwal, Gaurav Gupta to name a few. I also walked at the Green Carpet in IIFA – Toronto, 2011.

Recently, I was chosen to walk the Red Carpet at the Cannes Film Festival with ace designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, in one of his creations! It has been my most memorable moment till date.I also enjoyed presenting the Outstanding Achiever award to actor Imran Khan at the GQ Awards 2011.

Fashion is not only my profession, but also my passion! I enjoy every aspect of it and totally love being a part of this industry. It has given me the opportunity to indulge in some of my most favourite things in life that includes travelling. So far I have visited Moscow, Macau, Sri Lanka, West Africa and Canada. I look forward to exploring many more places in the near future.

I am crazy about food, chocolates and ice creams. The times I relish the most are when I am with my family and friends. I believe in being a good human being with a positive attitude. I have reached this far in life with self-motivation and a positive outlook, which have been the key to my success. There are so many other things that I really enjoy doing, such as watching movies, diving, travelling, exploring new places and even taking a stroll on the beach.

"Beti”

  • Why do we kill a girl?
  • Isn't she the pivot of the Universe?
  • Isn't she going to mother our future generations?
  • Isn't she Nature's most beautiful gift to our planet?

With these thoughts in my mind, I decided to associate myself with "Beti". It is a campaign against female foeticide, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The main aim of this noble cause is to spread awareness about female foeticide that is still rampant all across the country.

Female foeticide is an act of killing a perfectly healthy female foetus or abandonment of a young girl. According to statistics, over 10 million girls are "missing" from India's population. Due to widespread gender discrimination in the country, there is foeticide, sex selective abortions, and neglect of girl child. "Beti" will be a voice raised against this mindset that is eating into the entrails of our social structure.

As an advocate of gender equality, I have also actively participated in the awareness campaign against female foeticide in Haryana. My parents and Mr Anand Sagar who runs the Sant Garibdas Foundation in Haryana helped me in this drive.
